HEB Presents Littleton Multi-Modal Bridge Options
Chris Fournier, Lead Structural Engineer, made a presentation to the Littleton Board of Selectmen and River District Redevelopment Commission yesterday afternoon, reviewing options for a new multi-modal prefabricated bridge over the Ammonoosuc River. HEB was selected in April to assist the Town in designing and permitting a 140-foot bridge appropriate for pedestrian and recreational vehicle use in downtown Littleton.
Originally, it was hoped that the original abutments of the long-since removed Bridge Street Bridge could be reused as is for this project but, as Fournier explained to the board, commission, and public attendees yesterday, they are in poor condition and will need to be repaired as part of the project. Fournier also reviewed several prefabricated bridge alternatives, including wood, aluminium, and steel options. The commission recommended and the board agreed to move forward with a bow-string weathering steel truss bridge, similar to the one shown in the photo below. The next stages of the project will include design of the abutment repairs and permitting with NHDES. Construction of the bridge is expected to begin this fall.
