Berlin Riverwalk
Following the successful completion of the $6M Route 16 Roadway Reconstruction through the heart of Berlin, HEB was selected by the City of Berlin to design and permit a multi-use path on the banks of the Androscoggin River. The riverwalk project was integral to the planning of the Route 16 improvements and was identified as a critical element in the city’s vision for its downtown. The result is a treasured community feature that allows the public to come together and safely experience the natural beauty of the waterway.
The project includes a 10-foot-wide, non-motorized, paved multi-modal path between NH Route 16 and the western bank of the Androscoggin River. The riverwalk is approximately 3,200 linear feet in length and connects active recreation and greenspace areas along the corridor. Two scenic overlooks were constructed providing seating and gathering spaces to observe and experience the river. New decorative benches and picnic tables provide space for passive recreation. The project also included the development of a naturalized buffer along the bank of the river for stormwater treatment and erosion control improvements as well as solar-powered lighting along the pathway and crosswalks.
The City was successful in obtaining approximately $1.1 million in grant funding from the NHDOT Transportation Alternatives Program (TAP) and Northern Border Regional Commission (NBRC). The project was administered through the NHDOT LPA process and construction was completed in 2023 by Ray’s Electric and General Contracting.
